Rubb, how is school going? Have you decided what your topic of study will be? Are you praying on any nubile Michigan moisties? Africa or Asia summer 2009?

nubile michigan moisties is a dirty, wonderful phrase. it might be the title of my dissertation. i went on a self-imposed girl hiatus upon my arrival here. for the first time in my life i'm walking a career path that i believe in and i wanted to focus on it. this lasted about 2 months. followed by this were 2 months of living the painful realization that despite all my personal improvements since i was last an eligible bachelor on a calloege campus, i am still incapable of meeting random girls. now i've recently begun a phase of having a nice lady prospect, but not stressing over how it works out because i am so busy, which is nice.

school started out absolutely brutal. i went from being a complete hedonistic slacker surrounded by friends and family and perfect recreation immediately to having to work 70 hours a week, with no family or friends, with a shattered confidence in my intellect and no time or even decent options for recreation. I was working nonstop and still falling behind and fucking up, and i was in 800 level psych classes despite never having taken a psych class. i had also broken my wrist and started getting fat and had lots of headaches. now....well i guess i'm still in this situation but at least i've come to terms with it and accepted my failures as steps along the journey. a phd program is a long and lonely road they say, but i still like it.

on the other hand, i'm once again devoting myself to something bigger than just recreation, i'm learning fascinating things and i'm coming up with great ideas for research projects. i think growth is a primary meaning of life, and i'm in the process of testing this out. i think i will be excellent at this professor thing, but not yet. i'm also feeling very alive. funny how we feel most alive when we also feel most beaten. that's something i'm sure jake understands.

so there's your rob update.

as long as we're doing focused questions, i want to hear about the chicago marathon. was it cold?

as for travels, i'm not sure. patagonia or argentina are still at the top of my list, and i could probably swing it this summer. next summer might be tougher. not sure much about either though.

urban asia frightens me. i could get into those yellow mountains though. what about alaska?

and how's jake school going?
