But this question just had to be raised. Do people really jerk off with a sock? It seems like everywhere I look, "grab a sock" implies the first phase of a jacking off process, and I just don't get it. It seems like the man and the sock both suffer each other's involvement in the act.

Hmmm....jerking off has been one of my favorite subjects and favorite activities for over 50 years (really!) and I've never heard sock associated with it. That's what I like about blogs though...you learn something new every day!
Rob, where do you find these people? First you were stalked by tiddliwinks, and now you're getting supportive feedback from 3M and dirty, dirty enthusiasm from HOG. In my opinion, the sock tradition a) is real, and b) most likely has its roots in the armed forces.
You don't jerk off with the sock dummies, you jerk off into the sock. It's where the mess goes when you blow your load. Unless you like warm, salty splooge on your legs, its very handy.
